Watching another human being giving an exceptional performance in sports or any other
endeavor is spellbinding. Have you ever witnessed such an event? If so you have seen
what we all desire; peak performance. Athletes and performers describe the experience
as very gratifying and they often try again and again to recapture the experience because
of the pleasure they experience in that peak moment. Getting into the zone is not only
seen in sports although we most often pursue it in athletics. Attorneys and physicians,
musicians and singers, even construction workers and cooks have moments which may spread
into hours when the exact execution of skill is needed to complete very difficult tasks.
Being stretched to our limits is a necessary condition for entering the fertile ground
of "the Zone". When the challenge of the moment is very high and is matched by the skills
honed and well practiced there is a good possibility that a peak moment is nearby.
Why you ask?
When we are stretched to our limits the focus of attention is squarely on the task at hand.
There is no room for error. All our focus is on the details needed to execute the process.
There is a narrowing of our mind so that what exists outside the body is minimized and what
is occurring inside is a mind-body fusion. There is little effort required because all
energies are devoted in a seamless execution of skill.
Now hold on here! How in the world can we get into this thing? When I feel bored I play
lousy golf, don't you? When I play in tight situations where money or prestige is on the
line I get at least a little nervous. Don't you? So how do we get into this "Zone"? Well
it seems the people who have to perform flawlessly have found that how one defines a situation
has everything to do with how we perform. For example: if I think a player is far better than
me and I don't redefine the situation I will probably loose. Right? However, if I can redefine
the situation into a challenge to create an upset and imagine myself as having more guts, more
wisdom and I am more confident in my skills, I can embark on an very interesting round of golf
and take up the challenge of putting together a superlative round. I will have defined clear
goals, and know exactly what I am to do. When I am doing the things I intend to do I will know
it clearly. When I can feel the stroke of the putt or the sensations of my swing as matching
what I have envisioned I know that I am playing well. And when I know I am playing well I
know I can WIN! And when I know I can win I feel invincible. Sound interesting?
The mental skills needed to excel in this way require as much training as hitting the ball well
and far. It's the area neglected by most golfers. Are you one ?
